ABOUT US
Mount Babylon was founded in 2001 by Johan and Yolanda Holtzhausen. At that time only a few established wineries existed, namely Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson and Newton Johnson. The Holtzhausen family then started to plant vines and made their first wine in 2006. The directors of the company are Johan Holtzhausen and Mauritz Holtzhausen.
KWV was interested to establish a mother block scheme in the Walker Bay area that was free of any viruses. In order to have access to quality plant material, Mount Babylon participated in this project.
During the establishment phase, a French film company shot a film about Napoleon's life on St Helena Island on the farm using Babylon's Toring as the back drop.
"Mount Babylon" is a registered trade mark today and its 8 year old vineyards produce some of the best Shiraz, Malbec and Viognier in South Africa.
The pristine beauty of the mountains and fynbos adds to its surroundings and the unique experience.
"Everyone knows that the best tabaccos, the best teas and coffees and many other products of the soil are blends. Blends of elements with differing characteristics, possibly from different sources, all harmoniously combined, ‘provide' for the greater satisfaction of man.”
